A: I'm afraid I did. My students were reading Maybe the Saddest Thingby Marcus Wicker, in which he writes a series of excellent love poems. The kids told me (after struggling to write their own love poems) I should try to write one myself. This is what I came up with. I read it to my entire high school in December, and they loved it. Believe me. This is a great poem. Terrific.
Q: Do you write a lot of political poetry?
A: This isn't political. It's a love poem. It's right there in the title. Trust me.
Q: Are you going to post more poems on your blog? I love this and/or I am sorely offended.
A: Probably not too often. I wanted to get this one published in a legitimate literary venue, but the magazines to which I sent it (perhaps wisely) did not accept it. It seemed right to share it today, just in time for Super Tuesday.
